September videogame sales rise at moderate pace ahead of new consoles
- Videogame sales growth moderated in September, but continued a
months-long streak of year-over-year gains, riding on strength in mobile,
hardware and accessories.
- Overall sales were up 10% in September from the previous September, to
$4.3B, according to NPD Group. Year-to-date sales in this pandemic era
are
now $33.69B overall, up 21% from the same period in 2019.
- All categories again saw increases. Hardware spending rose 15% to
$277M, as gains in Nintendo Switch (OTCPK:NTDOY) offset declines in
other platforms (Sony (NYSE:SNE), Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT)) that are
nearing a new-generation refresh. Year-to-date, hardware spending is up
22%
to $2.3B.
- And accessories spending saw the biggest percentage gain, up 30% to a
September-record $191M. That was paced by new September and YTD sales
records for gamepad and headset/headphone spending, analyst Mat
Piscatella
notes.
- The Xbox Elite Series 2 Wireless Controller was the best-selling
accessory. Year-to-date spending on accessories is up 26% to an all-time
high $1.6B.
- Meanwhile, content spending rose 8% year-over-year to $3.84B for
September. That brings its YTD gains to 20%, to $29.78B.
- Two new entries knocked *Madden NFL 21*(NASDAQ:EA) from the top spot
on the dollar sales chart: *Marvel's Avengers*(OTCPK:SQNNY) debuted at
the top spot with the second-best launch-month sales for a superhero game
ever (behind only *Marvel's Spider-Man).*
- And it was trailed by No. 2 title *Super Mario 3D All-Stars* (
OTCPK:NTDOY), which marked the year's second-best launch month for
physical dollar sales.
- *Madden* came in at No. 3, followed by two more new titles: *Tony
Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2*(NASDAQ:ATVI) at No. 4, and *NBA 2K21*(NASDAQ:
TTWO) at No. 5.
- Rounding out the content top 10: No. 6, *Call of Duty: Modern Warfare*
(ATVI); No. 7, *Crusader Kings III* (Paradox Interactive); No. 8, *Animal
Crossing: New Horizons* (OTCPK:NTDOY); No. 9, *Star Wars: Squadrons*
(EA);
No. 10, *Mario Kart 8: Deluxe* (OTCPK:NTDOY).
