Nasdaq outperforms, while S&P dips below 3,400 - In the absence of stimulus headlines, the market had a fairly consistent day, with technology outperforming and the S&P (SP500) battling around the 3,400 level. - At the close of trading it finished short, down 0.3%, and closing below that level for the first time in three weeks. - The Nasdaq (COMP) rose 0.6% as the big semiconductor deal helped sentiment early and the megacaps gained traction through the day. FB FTC huddling as end to Facebook antitrust probe nears - report - The Federal Trade Commission is "huddling privately" to discuss its antitrust probe of Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), The Washington Post reports - signaling its investigation has moved closer to an endgame. - Exact timing of any action is unclear. But a federal suit would follow closely on the Justice Department's landmark antitrust suit against Google (GOOG, GOOGL), and signal all-out war between the administration and Silicon Valley. - And it would follow an FTC privacy investigation into matters linked to the Cambridge Analytica breach that resulted last year in a $5B fine, a record for an FTC tech fine. - Now, as with Google, the focus is on competition, and specifically Facebook's dominance in social networking along with its purchases of Instagram and WhatsApp (which feds argue has ultimately made the company into a social monop

The Nasdaq ended up 0.2%, trailing with growth stocks under some pressure as rates climbed. - The S&P had been down as much as 0.6% in morning trading, but spiked higher when Speaker Nancy Pelosi said progress on a stimulus deal was "just about there". S&P cuts losses as Pelosi says stimulus agreement 'just about there' - Just when the market thought it was out, fiscal stimulus pulls it back in. - Stocks had broken out of their channel and were selling off, but spiked as Nancy Pelosi sounded more confident at today's press conference, saying they were "just about there". - But later in the press conference, Pelosi said any bill would still have to go through legal and the CBO, which doesn't give it a very good chance of being passed before the election just from a time consideration. - Pelosi also clarified that state and local funding and liability protection are still sticking points, leaving the question of just how much progress has been made. - As it stands, the S&P (SP500) has trimmed gains and is flat, as is the Dow (DJI). The Nasdaq (COMP) is off 0.4%. |Today, 11:06 AM|26 Comments
