Nasdaq outperforms, while S&P dips below 3,400
- In the absence of stimulus headlines, the market had a fairly
consistent day, with technology outperforming and the S&P (SP500)
battling
around the 3,400 level.
- At the close of trading it finished short, down 0.3%, and closing
below that level for the first time in three weeks.
- The Nasdaq (COMP) rose 0.6% as the big semiconductor deal helped
sentiment early and the megacaps gained traction through the day. Chips
as
a sector, though, fell, as Xilinx's gains were countered by the pressure
on
buying company AMD.
- The Dow (DJI) was the underperformer, off 0.8%, with post-earnings
weakness in 3M and Caterpillar weighing.
- Industrials (NYSEARCA:XLI) was the worst-performing sector in the S&P,
followed by fellow cyclicals Financials (NYSEARCA:XLF) and Energy
(NYSEARCA:XLE).
- At the end, just two sectors gained, Tech and Communications Services
(NYSEARCA:XLC).
- Eli Lilly was one of the worst performers in the S&P on disappointment
on earnings and its COVID antibody treatment.
