Netflix explores licensing its content in apparent reversal - report
- Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) has explored the prospect of licensing out its
shows to other distribution outlets in recent months, The Information
reports.
- That would mark a major strategy reversal, not to mention a new
revenue stream.
- Netflix could send its successful original series (which have included
such titles as Stranger Things and The Queen's Gambit) to outlets owned
by
the likes of NBCUniversal and ViacomCBS.
- And it would mean at least partially buying in to a decades-old model
where the periodic content release model emphasized limited availability
of
programming.
- Shares have jumped, heavily paring the day's losses to 1%.
- The Information points to Netflix's 2018 movie Bird Box, which it's
discussed licensing to CBS (VIAC, VIACA), and to Peacock (NASDAQ:CMCSA),
which had discussed licensing older movies and shows like 2018 film *The
Christmas Chronicles.*
- And it could mean Netflix has decided at least that older movies
aren't winning or retaining subs, according to the report.
- That may be borne out by Nielsen's weekly streaming ratings chart,
where
TV series dominate streaming minutes (and Netflix's original series
dominate eyeballs).
