Disney Plus rivaling Netflix in subscriber loyalty, research shows
- It's well known that Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) has a long head start when
it comes to streaming subscribers - just look at the weekly streaming
ratings, where its huge subscriber base leads to billions of minutes
streamed - but rivals are pulling closer when it comes to attitudes and
loyalty to a service.
- Disney Plus (NYSE:DIS) has only been around for 16 months and has its
own strong subscriber trajectory, and it now rivals Netflix in terms of
customer loyalty.
- Of U.S. consumers who added streaming services during the COVID-19
pandemic, 77% say they will definitely keep Disney Plus and only 7% say
they'll definitely drop it, according to Hub data.
- That compares with Netflix, whose "definitely keep" number is 73%, but
only 4% say they will definitely drop Netflix.
- And behind those two on the loyalty scale are Amazon Prime Video
(NASDAQ:AMZN) and Hulu (DIS).
- Meanwhile, newer entrants are also seeing some loyalty: Discovery Plus
(NASDAQ:DISCA) gets 66% of consumers saying they're definitely keeping
it, while HBO Max (NYSE:T) rates 63% "definitely keeping." Those two
also have higher "definitely drop" numbers, though: 14% and 17%
respectively.
- Looking at the wider numbers, the overall TV sub most likely to have
fallen into the "dropped" category is traditional pay TV (whether cable,
satellite or telco).
