U.S Capitol building goes on lockdown following protester breach
- Following a protest in front of the Capitol building in Washington
D.C., a segment of protesters are now reported to have clashed with and
moved past police outside to enter the building.
- Multiple members of Congress have been instructed to stay inside and
locked their doors.
- Vice President Pence was escorted from the Chamber following the
reports.
- The incident occurred nearly simultaneously with debate in both houses
of Congress of the objection to the Arizona electoral college votes.
- The D.C. Mayor has ordered a citywide curfew that begins at 6 p.m. ET.
- Risk assets, including the S&P 500 (NYSEARCA:SPY) ticked lower as
images were circulated of the unrest.
- Though the protests were originally planned to surround Congress's
largely ceremonial counting of the electoral college votes, it also
coincides with the results of the Georgia special election. *As of
4:06pmET,* NBC News projects that Jon Ossoff will prevail in his Senate
race, giving Democrats a narrow majority. Investors have different views
on how that would play out.
- Update: 2:45pmET. The Senate and House chambers are under evacuation
order. "Police are physically trying to bolster the door to the House
chambers as protesters bang," Bloomberg's Jennifer Jacobs tweets.
