Apple pulls plug on Parler app, following Google; Amazon to stop hosting
(updated)
- Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has pulled the Parler app from its App Store - the
latest move in a social media battle that has ramped up heavily in the
few
days since supporters of President Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol.
- After yesterday warning Parler - a preferred social network for
conservatives and Trump supporters unhappy with alternatives in Twitter
(NYSE:TWTR), Google (GOOG, GOOGL) and Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) - Apple gave
Parler 24 hours to moderate its content or be removed.
- Apple says Parler is allowing too many posts that encourage violence
and crimes.
- Google also removed the Parler app from its Play Store.
- "We have always supported diverse points of view being represented on
the App Store, but there is no place on our platform for threats of
violence and illegal activity," Apple says in a statement. "Parler has
not taken adequate measure to address the proliferation of these threats
to
people's safety. We have suspended Parler from the App Store until they
resolve these issues."
- *Updated 11:19 p.m.:* Amazon is dropping Parler from its Web hosting
service, with a letter citing specific violent posts on the service.
That effectively takes the social network offline until it can find a new
host for its offering. The move is effective Sunday at 11:59 p.m. PT.
While
Google and Apple had pulled the app from their stores, those users who
already had the apps installed could log in (or users could log in via
Parler's site).
