House has enough votes to impeach Trump for second time (update)
- *Update:* The House has impeached the president for the second time,
with 10 GOP members voting for impeachment.
#####
- The House of Representatives has reached the threshold needed to
impeach President Donald Trump in its ongoing vote.
- The article of impeachment says the president incited insurrection in
connection with the storming of the U.S. Capitol last week.
- The next step would be a trial in the Senate.
- Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says he will not use emergency
powers to convene the Senate early, so a trial would come after the
inauguration of President-Elect Joe Biden.
- "There has never been any chance that any fair or appropriate trial
would conclude before President-elect Biden is sworn in," McConnell said,
according to Bloomberg. "It will serve our nation best if both Congress
and
the executive branch spend the next seven days completely focused on
facilitating a safe inauguration and an orderly transfer of power to the
incoming Biden Administration."
- Biden has said he would like a bifurcated Senate session so that a
trial could occur concurrent with business for his legislative agenda.
- After hours the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSEARCA:SPY) is up 0.1%.
